Parcelly meets HEC Paris: Lessons in Leadership, Resilience and Strategic Growth

Yesterday, Parcelly proudly hosted the ambitious and driven HEC Paris Business School students for the fourth consecutive year. Their UK tour brings them face‑to‑face with innovators and industry leaders, making a conversation with our CEO and Founder Sebastian Steinhauser the ideal opportunity to challenge assumptions, exchange ideas and inspire their next steps.

Sebastian delivered an inspiring and highly engaging presentation that traced his entrepreneurial journey from his early corporate career to building Parcelly into the technology company it is today. He reflected on the foundations that shaped his development, emphasising how his time in corporate provided invaluable structure, exposure and financial stability. Underscoring that a corporate career can enable you to build the skills and discipline required to scale a business from the ground up, particularly when initial capital is not readily available.

A key message he shared was the importance of steering a company towards profitability before accelerating into growth. He encouraged students to recognise that growing fast and becoming another headline success story is far less meaningful than building a sustainable, resilient business. With that mindset, he underlined the discipline required to discern which ideas are good and which ideas are strategically right for the company. Many ideas can be exciting, but leaders must prioritise focus, clarity and a centralised roadmap.

Sebastian also equipped students with practical guidance on what investors genuinely look for in pitch decks. Alongside this, he offered a realistic view of entrepreneurship and described the challenges that shaped Parcelly’s growth. These included navigating the unpredictability of Covid-19, entering new international markets and pivoting the business model as the industry evolved.

One of the most notable takeaways from the session was the transformation of Parcelly from an operational logistics solution into the tech-first, intelligence-driven platform it is today. Sebastian explained how the company matured into a dense, multi-vertical network powered by proprietary technology. He highlighted the importance of continuous industry observation, speaking to market leaders and conducting thorough research before taking a business into new territories.

The students also presented a range of impressive projects, from AI-driven congestion management to automated legal service platforms and even a personalised herbal tea concept. A clear theme emerged: technology, and particularly AI, now sits at the heart of early‑stage innovation across every sector. It has become a key catalyst for new business creation, enabling increasingly specialised and ambitious ideas. It was fascinating to see this breadth of innovation beyond our own logistics space.

The day concluded with a dynamic Q&A session. Students asked insightful questions about hiring practices, commercial strategy and Sebastian’s decision to establish his company in London rather than Germany. They were also curious about operational scalability, prompting Sebastian to demonstrating Parcelly’s core smart app features.

This was far from being a traditional lecture. It was a genuine exchange of ideas, perspectives and ambitions amongst peers. The energy in the room shifted between presentation and collaboration, and it was inspiring to see students openly challenging concepts, sharing bold ideas and engaging with real entrepreneurial insights. A perfect reminder that innovation grows fastest in conversations that go both ways.

Thought provoking quotes:

  • When asked if he regretted leaving his job to start a business, Sebastian replied: “No. I regret not leaving earlier!”
  • “Every business is a risk. Even the best ideas can fail at execution.”
  • “Pivoting is normal. It is part of natural progression.”
  •  “Everything falls or flies with the team. It is absolutely crucial."
